To kick off the school holidays, we went up to Ubud for 3 nights. We stayed about 15 mins out of town in a quirky hotel called The Mansions Baliwood Resort. Trent and I weren’t sure about the place but the kids loved it. One thing that is hard to find when travelling as a family is a large family room (and for a reasonable price) and this place was awesome for that! We had a HUGE room with two single beds and a queen bed and then a separate HUGE bathroom with a bathtub – a novelty as we only have showers in our villa. So everyday the kids enjoyed a bubble bath!

The first morning after breakfast we did the famous Campuhan Ridge Walk which was a little challenging for the kids in the strong morning heat but we were all rewarded at a lovely place that sold cold fresh coconuts and banana bread which was gobbled down super quick!

We did another walk the following morning through the rice fields to a popular café called Sari Organik. Another hot morning but we all enjoyed it except when Demi spotted a metre long brown snake slither right across our path! It was only a few feet away! Yikes!

It is the rainy season in Bali and most nights we are used to it raining however the first night we came back from dinner the storm was so heavy that our hotel reception completely flooded! We were informed to wait for a while till it was safe to walk to our room! The kids were super scared as we had to take our shoes off and with the help of the hotel staff we were escorted back to our room in nearly knee high deep water! We later found out that it was the biggest storm in Ubud in the last 6 years!

On the last day, the kids got to experience a Silver Making class at the Pendok library and Learning Centre. They had a private session with two local jewellery makers and designed their own pendants. Liam decided on making a Gemini symbol as he is a June baby and Demi always wanted a ‘’Demi’ necklace so she was super surprised that she could make that. Whilst they were learning and making their pieces a group of girls practicing their traditional Kecak dancing wihile boys played all the local instruments. A noisy but great backdrop to the class!

Before we headed home, Demi bought a traditional batik wooden Mancala game from the Ubud markets. She learned how to play it at school with her Indonesian teacher and was super excited to teach me when we got home.

It was a lovely 3 night getaway and I would be keen to visit the Ubud Writers Festival in October this year.
